Alta High is known for many sports like football, basketball and soccer, but a difficult and rewarding sport often gets overlooked -wrestling! Wrestling challenges a competitor both physically and mentally.
“Wrestling made me stronger and healthier,” said Ben Wright. “It’s also a good way to meet new people and build friendships.” Wrestling can teach life skills, discipline and motivation, which will help in life, and it will also whip you into shape, making it a great way to exercise.
The best way to start your wrestling journey is by going to open mats on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:45-3:45. Anyone can go, no matter the experience. If you are scared to wrestle or have doubts, Alta’s new wrestling coach, Brett Fiene, encourages you to “have patience, trust the process and to try things that don’t feel right and to be open a new way of thinking.”
Coach Fiene has a bold prediction for the upcoming season, “I think we have multiple wrestlers who will make it to state this year,” Fiene said in an interview with the Hawkeye. “Their goal is to be top 5 with both girls and boys wrestling.”
The wrestling team is also trying to raise money through their Snap Raise so if you are interested in supporting the team, go donate! Coach Fiene or Coach Webb can provide more details on how to donate.
