As Alta hits early February, the baseball team is starting to ramp up their preseason workouts. Tryouts are right around the corner (February 24) and players are hoping to perform well enough in the coaches’ eyes to make the team. Players are not only playing harder to make the team, but also to prepare for the season opener against their rival, the Corner Canyon Chargers. The game will kick off at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, at Corner Canyon. The JV and the fresh/soph team will play on Wednesday, March 12, at Corner Canyon.
“I’ve had to put in a lot of work in practice to show the coaches I really want to be on the team so it’s been kinda hard.” said Gauge Carlisle, a freshman who is trying out for the team.
John Warren is a junior trying to return. “I’d say last year, in the playoffs, I wasn’t pitching that well and I got moved down to day three,” said Warren, as he talked about how hard it’s been trying to show the coaches he has the talent to make the team. “And then this year, I’m back up to where I was.”
There are different challenges for different age groups. Freshmen, such as Carlisle, struggle to try to gain traction and get things rolling to perform well for the coaches and team. Meanwhile, returning players, like Warren, struggle to keep up the momentum they’ve had and rise to what they are capable of.
Alta is looking for an opening win after a 10-7 loss to Corner Canyon in last year’s opener. Corner Canyon had a great season last year, finishing with a 20-14, and also looking for redemption after the heartbreak loss to Lehi in game 3 of the State Championship. The Hawks will hope to prevent another outcome like that and start the season off with a W.
