This year’s assembly opened with a BANG!- with our team of talented drummers performing as students and teachers alike filed into the bleachers.
SBO(student body officers)
Featuring an exclusive interview with senior SBOs, Sophie Lo- Historian, Topher Willmore- Audio visual officer, Andie Anderson- Secretary.
The reason we even have a Welcome assembly is courtesy of our wonderful SBOs.
As you enter the auditorium you can see the corresponding SBOs standing by their grade level greeting and chatting with students as they walk in. As the assembly begins the SBOs are working behind the scenes to make sure everything runs smoothly.
This year our SBOs introduced a few new traditions. The first one is the new A-Town couch. The A-Town couch will be at different sporting events for the kids with the most spirit to sit on. The second tradition is the new wheel of fortune they will be using at assemblies to get students more involved.
Our own senior historian Sophie Lo talked about how much they wanted to highlight participation and engagement this year with the assembly and how that was a main goal going into talking about what would happen.
While talking the SBOs mentioned they had some new fun traditions planned that go along with the hoco dance. Topher Willmore (senior audio visual officer) said “because of the new score board we have gotten we are planning on doing a movie night during homecoming week”. How fun is that!
Our amazing SBOs constantly have new creative ideas to keep everyone involved!
Dance Company
Featuring an exclusive interview with DC member, Josie Jepson
This year our wonderful dance company graced the floor with fluid moves and awesome beats. Their performance was flawless, jackets of red with Alta’s name on them demanded that all eyes be on them, and all eyes were.
Dance Company member, Josie Jepson – who has accepted an interview from our team at Hawkeye- has been dancing ever since she was three years old.
“What made you join the Dance Company?” Hawkeye member Bria Thorley asks, “It’s always been a dream of mine.” Josie responds. Josie talks about how she grew up around the dance scene and has always heard good things from previous dancers. Dance company has been a long standing tradition at Alta- some teachers who used to be students even remembering the performances.
“How long did the routine at the assembly take to memorize?” Bria asks.
“We did 8 hour practices for five days a week, two weeks before school started.” That is a lot of commitment from our wonderful hawks, and they are already working hard yet again to perfect the Homecoming performance coming up soon.
“What is it like performing in front of almost the whole school?”
“Its the best feeling ever, just hearing the crowd cheer.”
Josie’s love for dancing shines when in the limelight, you could tell that every single one of the dancers had worked hard to perfect the performance they gave. Each one could be seen with a smile on their face and they danced in the gaze of all.
This group of skilled young people is just one of the many performances witnessed on the day of the assembly.
Drum Line
Booming like thunder, creating a rhythm of sound the drum line once again wowed with the trash can performance!
Our drum line welcomed all new and old students today with their catchy rhythms and fun beats.
One of the best known traditions at our welcome assembly is the trash can performance. The trash can performance with its hard hits and radiating energy always gets everyone hyped. The drum line highlights so much of the school spirit Alta has. Watching the performance will have you on the edge of your seat as you watch the drummers jump over and on top of the bins and throw their sticks across the room.
One of students favorite part of the performance is when the drummers get held upside down from their legs and play an iconic fill. As said by alumni Leila Woodward “it’s so exciting watching them hang and still play so smoothly”
The drum line is the holder of the mood, perfecting the hard to master instruments that carry mood. It is safe to say that without the drums, the assembly simply wouldn’t have been the same.
The drum line is constantly hyping students up and it’s not an assembly without them!
Cheer Team
School Cheers echoing through the gym as the school spirit can be felt among the Team.
The cheer team is an amazing crowd of talented young women, bearing pom-poms and eyes full of school spirit. They stood atop each other’s shoulders and shook the school colors in their hands, holding up single letter signs that all together spelled out “ALTA”. With their amazing cheers, they also can be seen at most school events. Hyping up the student section and keeping the vibe alive for everyone.
These amazing girls are so strong, capable of putting complete trust into their team mates as they hold each other up, high into the air.
Our cheer team spends countless hours preparing for dances, performances, or competitions. Every trick or flip amazes the crowd showcasing the girls skills. Our cheer teams outfits this year sport white long sleeves and black tops with a black skirt. The skirt and top have white detailing as well as white letters spelling out our school name. If you ever need a cheery smile and some pep in your step say hi to some of our spectacular girls.
Ballroom Team
The echoing of heels and stoic faces, gliding in an embrace.
This year our ballroom flew across the room doing extraordinary lifts and quick movements to the hit ‘7 Nation Army’ by The White Stripes. This song along with the fluid movements of the various duos on the floor was captivating, and demanded that all eyes be on them.
The crowd was engrossed as partners lifted the girls spinning in circles watching the flowy dresses whip through the air. The ballroom works so hard with so much commitment to every performance and always wows everyone watching. Everyone cheered watching a beautiful lift as the girls rose into the air spreading their arms looking like the Hawks that they are.
You will always see them with slick hair and bright red lipstick. The men in clean fitted black suits with a white tie and white pocket square. Meanwhile we see the girls in long sleeve mesh dresses daunting red and white gems on the cuffs of the sleeves and flowing down the neckline. While dancing you watched the lights shimmer on the gems reflecting the beauties of the dance.
