Interested in leadership skills? Interested in the Navy? Then you should look into joining the Canyons NJROTC program. A full year program that teaches you leadership skills and discipline. The Alta journalism team has conducted an interview with the teacher for the class:
What’s your name?
“Master Chief Johnathan Ward.”
What is this program about?
“So the NJROTC program is about developing leaders, it’s about developing citizenships, It’s about giving students a place to belong. To feel like family, also learning some skills. We learn drill, we learn orienteering, we learn how to do color guard so there is a lot of opportunities for students that are looking for leadership. If they want to go into the military they’ll get a snapshot. But that’s not our primary focus. Our primary focus is leadership.”
Why should people join this program?
“I think if you feel any sense of pride in wearing a military uniform. The uniform we have is the same uniform that active duty sailors wear. That’s one thing, if you want to belong and learn discipline, if you want to learn communication, if you want to get leadership opportunities. Almost every one of my cadets get to have a leadership opportunity. That’s some of the reasons to join our program.”
Are there any benefits to joining the program?
“There are some benefits, so if you decide to go into the military. If you do two to three years [in the program] you’ll go in as an E-3. Which is about three to five hundred dollars more a month, so there’s that benefit. When you put it on a resume for a job that you were in JROTC. Employers know what they’re getting. They know they’re getting dependability. They know they’re getting a team player. They know that they are going to be on time. They have a lot of those skills. If you are applying for colleges it looks awesome on your resume. So tremendous benefits all around.”
