There’s No Stopping this Year’s Chalk the Walk

May 22, 2020

With seemingly everything being shut down, it’s refreshing to hear that not even the Coronavirus pandemic could stop Chalk the Walk, one of Alta’s most beloved traditions. Despite some modifications, the thirty-fifth annual event was able to proceed as planned. As part of the competition, pairs of students recreate famous pieces of art using sidewalk chalk. For this year’s competition, the theme was “Windows and Doors.”

“This theme was inspired by the Coronavirus, [and] being stuck inside longingly looking at our doors and windows,” said art teacher Katie Campbell.

This year, students completed the challenge from their homes, which meant that siblings, alumni included, were able to participate in the activity.

“I was excited that we could continue the tradition of Chalk the Walk this year. COVID created a bit of a challenge, however, the biggest benefit of students creating their chalk art at home was that Alta alum as well as siblings were able to participate in the fun,” continued Campbell.

Paige Michaels, one of Alta’s most prolific artists, competed with partner Cara Wilkey. “I like [Chalk the Walk] because it is fun to recreate a famous work of art in a fun and unique way. I also like working as a team to make something awesome.”

Chalk the Walk was a bright spot during a gloomy period, and it is heartwarming to see one of Alta’s oldest traditions continuing against the odds, and bringing art into the community.
