Good morning, Altamore! Every day’s like an open door (Hairspray)… to the theater department!
Alta’s theater department is filled to the brim with many talented and ambitious individuals who give their time and effort into making phenomenal performances that are the highlight of Alta’s school year, but what do they have in store for next year?
The Fall 2025 show for Alta High School is looking quite… intriguing. Students were given a set of clues to help them guess what musical they might do, and the responses varied.
Clue No. 1: A man in overalls holding a guitar.
“It being Hadestown is too obvious,” said Braden who has been doing theater since freshman year. He theorizes that the Gibson might be a lead to the original actress Deborah Gibson who was Belle in Broadway’s Beauty and the Beast.
“She’s wanting us to think that it’s Hadestown,” said Aubrey who has been doing theater since middle school. “But we don’t have a Hades. I’m moving away from the idea that it’s Hadestown.”
“It’s probably School of Rock,” said Becca says who has been doing theater since the age of thirteen.
Clue No. 2: A chapel or a church.
It’s a “lead up to Beauty and the Beast,” said Braden, as he continues on his initial prediction. It has an “old time-y French feel,” he observes. Aubrey had a different reaction.
“It made me tilt toward the idea of it being the Sound of Music,” she says. “She’s a nun in the beginning. But that’s also blunt. Knowing them [the department], it would probably be something so in depth that we would have probably never thought about it.”
Becca’s first reaction was “Jesus Christ Superstar?”
Clue No. 3 and 4 were released as well. Clue No. 3 included an image of a stone arch in rain, while Clue No. 4 showed “Hot Box” in neon letters and hands up in the air below it.
While the guesses vary, the one consensus that stayed was the fact that all three people who were interviewed do not want to do Cats the Musical.
It seems as though with every new clue, more musical predictions are birthed. The question of whether the people in charge are purposely confusing their students is on the table. In any case, whatever musical they will pick, it will be just as entertaining as the previous ones. The three theater students encourage Alta kids to look into joining theater for the great experience.
Braden, whose favorite musical is Anastasia, praises theater for giving him an opportunity to “Make a lot of friends.” He enjoys “being in the room, the stage. ..performing,” and describes the department as a “fun environment and accepting place. Everyone is nice, everyone is very supportive.”
Aubrey, whose favorite musical is Prince of Egypt, claims that theater is about “connections and skills” and how much of a community it creates.
“I’ve seen a vulnerable side of them, and they’ve seen a vulnerable side of me,” she says. “You get a giant group of friends. Experience and friends.”
“Being able to perform is such a gift,” says Becca, whose favorite musical is Six. “Rare opportunity to do it. Joy to be a part of” and “bring smiles to people’s faces.”
So regardless of what they have in store, joining Alta’s theater department is not an opportunity you want to miss.
As for the musical choice itself?
Just like Aaron Burr (Hamilton), you just have to wait for it.
