Last Tuesday, a mass of 25 states started a lawsuit against Trump’s administration. As you know from the past couple of weeks, the government has shut down. Since it is not working they have to reduce government spending, so government workers like the military aren’t getting paid. In addition they also have decided to stop funding food stamps. Now upperclassmen are upset with this because not only do they still have plenty of money to pay for one more month for food stamps if the government is still not up, but they also think this is targeting the 42 million families who need them. Without this fund they will be unable to eat the amount of food needed and will suffer. When the governors of many different states heard about this they united and sued Trump’s administration. This is the 5th day these people have not had their food stamps (since Nov 1st) and it’s causing more problems than just starving. The effects not only hurt the families but can waste over $400 billion dollars in food. After the quick lawsuit, the judge came out and said that the Trump Administration has to pay for these food stamps, and it needs to happen within the next few days. Trump, said he will only pay %50 of the funds and allegedly, the rest ($600 mil) will go towards food and nutrition to Puerto Rico and American Somoa- and state administration. With that, the Trump Administration threatened not to pay until the government shut down is over, but if false, this payment can be delayed and not funded for weeks! 1.2 million of these families will be without help with food coverage, and the rest will not have full coverage due to only being funded half. Utah at the moment has food banks, campus pantries, and you can call 211 to help find these food banks and pantries. Ask for help if needed, don’t wait until you have nothing.
