New legislation:
Recently, Utah Senator Michael McKell has sponsored a new act that would tax targeted advertising for social media companies. This act would make it so large companies will need to draw back or even shut down their targeted advertising due to the tax. This act would mainly target larger companies. This act also makes all tax revenue go to after school programs or mental health institutions.
How This Affects Students:
If this act is put into place, large companies will have to draw their targeted advertising back or accept the tax. If these large companies pull back their advertising it may help out many students. How? Social media is incredibly addicting to many people, especially students. With this act in place, students will become less addicted with these targeted ads being reduced.
Another way that students will be benefited by these changes is extra funding for extracurricular activities. This act would make it so most tax revenue from this bill would go to after school programs. This will be of a big benefit to school sport teams or school clubs.
