Music and laughter stole the show in the commons during Club Rush as the Pacific Islanders Club exhibited the rich and vibrant culture that People of the Pacific (PoP) have. One of the newer clubs to Alta, its main purpose is to educate students on the people and the culture of PoP.
“We have a culture mainly based on respect,” says parent advisor Nele Ofisa, “Sometimes people see PoP as scary and aggressive, but we’re really just teddy bears.”
The club hosts many events throughout the year, including monthly speakers, field trips, club socials and a clothing drive. The events help to highlight the culture of the PoP at Alta, along with enriching the lives of those in the club through motivational speakers and activities that help bring the members together.
“Were an easy going people,” says club member Marissa Ivins, “We have lots of fun meetings and activities, and are welcoming of everyone if they are thinking about joining.”
Ofisa wants students at Alta to know that the club is for everyone, regardless of your heritage or background.
“Its important that students know that everyone is welcome,” Ofisa said, “We would love to see more people come out and join our club, and even though Club Rush is over, students can still join.”
