Former Lady Hawks , Brecken Mozingo and Michele Vsconcelos, have been drafted to the NWSL Utah Royals team. Brecken Mozingo was the overall 7th pick on January 12th in the 2024 NWSL draft. Brecken was born and raised in Utah. She played soccer at Alta High School and set the school record of 38 goals in 2016. She attended BYU and led the team with 14 goals and 15 assists in the 2023 season.
“She was the most disciplined player.” Mackenzie Hyer, Alta soccer coach, said. “She was always the first one at practice and the last one to leave.”
Michele Vsconcelos played at Alta High School 2008-2011 and won Alta 3 state championships. She scored a total of 37 goals and 22 assists in her career here at Alta. She continued her career at BYU in 2012. She scored 30 goals and 27 assists in her career at BYU. In her final year of college, 2016, she was named West Coast Conference player of the year. She is now coming up on her 8th year of playing in the NWSL.
If you haven’t heard of the Royals, it’s ok because they’ve been moving around a lot. They are a NWSL team located in Utah. They started in Utah in 2017 and moved over to Kansas City In 2020. The Utah Royals website released news from 2023 stating that they have officially located back to Utah. The constant moving has affected their popularity.
With their newly built team led by head coach Amy Rodriguez, the Royals will take on the Chicago Red Stars in their first game on March 16, 2024. Alta soccer players will be extremely excited to see how they do. As an Alta Hawk it is awesome to see family come this far!
