The Plume Awards: Uniting Alta’s Authors

The+Plume+Awards%3A+Uniting+Altas+Authors

Writers at Alta might not know how many opportunities are available to them, but prizes ranging from scholarships to cash rewards are right under their noses. Book Club is a great way to find out about the library’s reading incentives (from cereal, to candy, to a hot chocolate bar), and you’ll stay up to date on scholarship opportunities like the Teen Author Boot Camp tickets offered. Creative Writing Club is another fantastic way to connect with other writers and explore new ways to write, and if you haven’t heard of the Euphony Magazine yet, you’re missing out on the best way to get your work published at Alta!

Many students have been personally impacted by the writing programs Alta offers. Emiline Johnson, who goes to the creative writing club every Friday and was in Mme. Defreiz’s creative writing class, notes that “there is a writing community at Alta” and it’s a “great community”.

Cassidy Pickering, editor of the Euphony Magazine, notes that these opportunities are “not just [for] creative writing students, [they’re for] all students”.

So, what’s the next opportunity for you to get involved? You might have missed the Teen Author Boot Camp scholarship, but the Euphony Magazine is hosting its annual Plume Award competition and submissions are open! First place is awarded a $50 cash reward and a full page in the Euphony Literature Magazine.

To find out more about this year’s Plume Award, visit the submission link here! To stay up to date on ways writers can get involved at Alta, follow Euphony on Instagram (@alta.euphony) and come to a club meeting (Book Club on the second Wednesday of every month in the library, Creative Writing every Friday at 12:45 in room 2303).

Alta’s librarian Ms. Scott notes that these sorts of opportunities are not just beneficial for you in high school, and “you can still put those publications on your resume as you’re applying for…college scholarships”.

Student input is highly encouraged, so if you catch wind of an opportunity you’d like to see at Alta, Ms. Scott would be happy to talk to you about it in the library.
